Haunting ‘mermaid’ mummy from Japan is a grotesque monkey-fish hybrid with ‘dragon claws,’ new scans reveal

A mysterious, malevolent-looking mermaid mummy that was launched once more to the U.S. from Japan larger than 100 years prior to now appears to be a mix of fish, monkey and lizard parts which have been joined collectively like Frankenstein’s monster, preliminary scans counsel.

The haunting mummy, which is spherical 11.5 inches (29 centimeters) prolonged, is called the “Fiji mermaid” due to its similarities with an object of the equivalent title supposedly acquired from Fiji by controversial showman P.T. Barnum throughout the 1840s. The mum was purchased in Japan by an American naval officer who donated it to the Clark County Historic Society in Springfield, Ohio, in 1906. Paperwork outfitted to the society with the mom counsel it dates once more to the mid-1800s.
